A YouGov poll released on Wednesday found that more than half of Americans approve of the Colorado Supreme Court decision to remove Donald Trump from their state ballot, including nearly a quarter of Republican voters.
The Colorado high court kicked Trump off the ballot under the 14th Amendment insurrection clause which bars anyone from office who swore an oath to “support” the Constitution and then “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against it.
The court argued that Trump was involved in an insurrection by promoting false claims of election fraud and encouraging his supporters to storm the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.
The YouGov survey of 3492 adults published one day after the explosive ruling found that more than half of the country, 54% either strongly or somewhat approve of the decision, while 35% either strongly or somewhat disapprove of the ruling.
An overwhelming majority of Democrats, 84% support the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to bar Trump from the ballot. The move was also supported by 48% of Independents and 24% of Republicans.
The Trump campaign said they will “swiftly” file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court after the ruling Tuesday. The Colorado Supreme Court stayed its decision until Jan. 4, or until the U.S. Supreme Court rules on the case.
43% of respondents in the YouGov Poll say they expect the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the decision, while 23% expects the court to uphold it.
