A 90-year-old Seattle woman walked six miles through snow over the weekend to get her first dose of the COVID vaccine.
Fran Goldman has been trying for weeks to get an appointment for the vaccine. On Friday afternoon she finally secured a spot with Seattle Children’s hospital, which was administering vaccines. She scheduled an appointment for Sunday at 9:10 a.m, unaware that a snowstorm was heading for Seattle.
“I had been spending a great deal of my time trying to get an appointment for a vaccination and finally on Friday, late afternoon I got one. I woke up Saturday to all the snow and thought ‘uh oh’. I know that our driveway is inaccessible in the snow,” Goldman said, according to a local station Q13Fox.
She was determine to make her appointment after finally securing a spot. So, on Saturday she did a test walk from her home to the hospital and was able to make it two-thirds of way. She was confident that she’d be able to make the full trip the next day. She did, arriving only 5 minutes late for her appointment.
“I got my vaccination and then I was told I had to sit and wait 15 minutes to make sure there was no reaction and I said I’m delighted to sit,” she said.
She is hoping to drive to her second appointment, weather permitting, but she is willing to walk again if that’s the only option.
“My mother isn’t going to let a little snow stop her from getting the vaccine,” her daughter told the Seattle Times “She was willing to walk however many miles there and back to get it. She is a really remarkable person who has the attitude of ‘You don’t let a little adversity get in your way.'”
