About 1,000 students at a Virginia high school are out sick with flu-like symptoms.

Florida teacher fired after asking students to write their own obituaries ahead of active shooter drill on campus.

Nearly half of the student body at Stafford High School in Stafford County, Virginia, were out sick Friday with flu-like symptoms, officials say.

A spokesperson said about 1,000 students did not show up for classes on Friday due to flu-like and gastrointestinal symptoms, NBC4 reports. As a result, all activities and sporting events are canceled through Sunday.

School officials are working with the Virginia Department of Health to investigate the root causes of the illness.
