Amanda Gorman says a guard followed her home because she "look suspicious"

Inaugural poet, Amanda Gorman said she was followed home by a security guard on Friday night, who demanded to know if she lived in her building because she “look suspicious”.

“A security guard tailed me on my walk home tonight,” Gorman wrote on Twitter. “He demanded if I lived there because “you look suspicious.” I showed my keys & buzzed myself into my building. He left, no apology. This is the reality of black girls: One day you’re called an icon, the next day, a threat.”

“In a sense, he was right. I AM A THREAT: a threat to injustice, to inequality, to ignorance. Anyone who speaks the truth and walks with hope is an obvious and fatal danger to the powers that be,” Gorman wrote in another tweet.

Gorman, 22 is the youngest inaugural poet in the country’s history and was named the country’s first youth poet laureate in 2017.

Since performing her stirring poem ‘The Hill We Climb‘ at President Biden’s inauguration in January, Gorman has gone on to perform at the Super Bowl and sign a contract with IMG modeling agency.

Her upcoming book, ‘The Hill We Climb: An Inaugural Poem for the country’ is already a bestseller on Amazon ahead of its release later this month.
