Minnesota governor and Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz signed a Taylor Swift bill into law this year.
The legislation was introduced by a Democratic lawmaker who was frustrated after failing to secure tickets to the Minneapolis leg of Swift’s highly anticipated ERAS Tour. This after ticket sales company, Ticketmaster’s system crashed due to the high demand for Swift’s tickets.
Walz also tweeted his disappointment at the time for being unable to secure tickets to the concert. He posted a photo of his cat Afton snarling with the caption: “Afton after being online all day and not getting Taylor Swift tickets.”
In May, Gov. Tim Walz signed the so-called ‘Taylor Swift’ bill into law to provide greater transparency and protection for online ticket buyers.
The law, called House File 1989—a reference to Swift’s birth year and a chart topping album—requires ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and bans resellers from selling multiple copies of the same ticket.
Walz said the new law provides “protection so you don’t get a bad ticket, a fraudulent ticket, and resellers can’t snatch them all up before you get an opportunity.”
The law only applies to tickets purchased in Minnesota or other states for concerts or other live events held in Minnesota.
This week, Harris selected Walz, a former teacher and Army National Guard veteran to join her on the Democratic ticket to defeat Former President Donald Trump in November.
In a statement, Harris highlighted Walz’s record as governor of Minnesota, including signing legislation to provide paid family and medical leave, protecting the right to abortion after the reversal of Roe v. Wade and enactment of legislation requiring universal background checks for gun purchases.
Swifties were understandably overjoyed after learning of Walz’s love for Swift.
‘SWIFTIE VP!! TICKETMASTER COUNT YOUR DAYS BABYYYYY!!!!!!!!,’ one user wrote.
“Remembering when @GovTimWalz signed our nation leading ticket integrity bill (Taylor Swift bill) at First Avenue,” another said.
