Former attorney generally Bill Barr is accusing New York Attorney General Letitia James of overreach by filing a lawsuit against Donald Trump and his adult children and said the suit might “backfire” on James by making people more sympathetic to Trump.
Earlier on Wednesday, James filed the suit against Trump, three of his adult children and his business, accusing them of fraudulent financial practices and seeking to bar them from real estate transactions for the next five years.
“It’s hard for me not to conclude that this is a political hit job,” Barr said during an appearance on Fox News Wednesday. “I’m not even sure that she has a good case against Trump himself, but what ultimately persuades me that this is a political hit job is that she grossly overreaches when she tries to drag the children into this.”
“Yes they have roles in the business,” Barr continued. “But this is his personal financial statement, prepared by the CFO, accounting firms were involved in it. The children aren’t going to know the details of that, nor are they expected in the real world to do their own due diligence and have it reviewed independently.”
Barr predicted that this lawsuit will end up “backfiring” on James because “it will make people more sympathetic to Trump.”
A new NBC News poll released over the weekend showed that a majority of registered voters, 56%, want the investigations into Trump’s alleged wrongdoing to continue. That includes 92% of Democrats, 56% of independents, and 19% of Republicans. 42 percent say the investigations should stop.
