Biden announces he is running for re-election.

President Joe Biden officially announced he is running for re-election on Tuesday ending months of speculation about whether the will seek another term.

Biden made the announcement in a campaign video that opened with scenes from the Jan. 6 Capitol riot when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the building followed by protests outside the Supreme Court after the high court overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that established the constitutional right to abortion in the U.S. in 1973.

“Freedom,” Biden says, then listed some of his administration’s accomplishments in his first two years in office. “That’s been the work of my first term: To fight for our Democracy.”

“All around the country MAGA Republicans are lining up to take away those bedrock freedoms,” Biden says. “Cutting Social Security that you’ve paid for your entire life while cutting taxes for the very wealthy. Dictating what health care decisions women can make, banning books, and telling people who they can love. All while making it more difficult for you to be able to vote.”

When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer,” he said, adding, “This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election.”

Biden,80, is already the oldest president and will be 86 if he’s reflected to another term.

70% of Americans, including 51% of Democrats, do not want Biden to run for president in 2024. Nearly half of respondents cited his age as a top reason according to a NBC News poll.
