Biden makes surprise visit to Ukraine.

President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to Ukraine on Monday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The visit comes days before the one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of the country.

“Joseph Biden, welcome to Kyiv! Your visit is an extremely important sign of support for all Ukrainians,” Zelenskyy posted on his Telegram along with a picture of the two leaders, according to NBC News.

“Unchecked aggression is a threat to all of us,” Biden said while delivering remarks at Mariinsky Palace alongside Zelenskyy. “One year later, Kyiv stands and Ukraine stands. Democracy stands, Americans stand with you and the world stands with you.”

Biden also announced an additional half-billion dollars in U.S. assistance, including shells for howitzers, anti-tank missiles, air surveillance radars and other military equipment and weapons.

The trip marks the first time in modern history that a U.S. president has entered a war zone where there is not an active American military presence.
