President Joe Biden slammed Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Wednesday saying the House speaker is choosing between saving his speakership and what’s best for the country.
Speaking at a campaign reception, Biden said he personally negotiated a deal with McCarthy in May to prevent the country from defaulting on its debt but the speaker appears to be reneging on the agreement
Biden accused Republicans of not abiding by the debt ceiling agreement as they seek to make deeper cuts than what was originally included in the deal.
“The fact is that I think that the speaker is making a choice between the speakership and American interest,” Biden said, according to The Hill.
Biden’s comment comes as House Republicans are failing to reach a consensus on a plan to fund the government before the Oct. 1 deadline to avoid a government shutdown.
The Senate has passed a bipartisan legislation to fund the government through Nov. 17 while negotiations continue, but McCarthy said he will not bring that legislation to the floor for a vote.
