Biden picks Rep. Deb Haaland for Interior Secretary.

Joe Biden has chosen Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) to be his interior secretary, making her the first Native American to be nominated to a Cabinet position.

A source told CNN, Haaland was picked, in part, because she is someone who has “spent her career fighting for all Americans, including tribal nations, rural communities, and communities of color.”

Haaland, a member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe, made history in 2018 when she became one of the first two Native American women to be elected to the United States Congress.

Even though Haaland’s selection would further weaken her already small majority in the House Speaker Pelosi praised her selection in a statement, writing: “Congresswoman Haaland knows the territory and if she is the President-elect’s choice for Interior Secretary, then he will have made an excellent choice.”
