Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has tested positive for COVID-19 after downplaying the dangers of the coronavirus for months, according to CNN.
He made the announcement on Tuesday while speaking on Brazilian TV: “Everyone knew that it would reach a considerable part of the population sooner or later. It was positive for me.”Â
Bolsonaro’s response to coronavirus in his country was downright Trumpian. He consistently downplayed the severity of the virus, dismissing it as a “little flu” in February and blame the media for causing panic about the virus in Brazil.
He continued to make public appearances without a face mask and disregard social distancing guidelines even going as far as to hug or shake hand with his supporters. But, on Sunday his luck ran out.
65-year-old Bolsonaro said he noticed he wasn’t feeling well on Sunday. By Monday, his symptoms worsen, he developed a fever, muscle ache and was feeling tired. Based on his symptoms the presidential doctor suspected it was COVID-19. He was tested and the results came back positive on Tuesday.
He said his medical team is treating him with azithromycin and hydroxychloroquine, the controversial anti-malarial drug touted by both him and Donald Trump as a potential treatment for COVID-19.
Brazil has over 1.6 million confirmed cases of coronavirus. They have the second-largest outbreak in the world behind the United States. More than 66,000 Brazilians have died from complications linked to the virus.
