Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg fired back at Donald Trump on Thursday after the president called him a “disaster” during a press conference about the Washington, D.C., plane crash.
Sixty-seven people are dead after an American Airlines plane collided with a Blackhawk helicopter over the Potomac River late Wednesday.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon Trump blamed the Biden administration and the FAA’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs for the deadly crash.
Trump also singled out Buttigieg claiming that he ran the Department of Transportation “right into the ground.”
Buttigieg fired back at Trump by defending his record as Transportation Secretary and calling the president’s comments “despicable.”
“Despicable. As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying. We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew Air Traffic Control, and had zero commercial airline crash fatalities out of millions of flights on our watch,” Buttigieg wrote on X.
“President Trump now oversees the military and the FAA,” he added. “One of his first acts was to fire and suspend some of the key personnel who helped keep our skies safe. Time for the President to show actual leadership and explain what he will do to prevent this from happening again.”
