Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) preemptively endorsed Ron DeSantis (R) for president on Wednesday even though the Florida governor has not officially announce he is joining the race.
“The next President of the United States must be a vibrant and energetic leader with the faith, vision, and courage to chart a new course. America needs a leader who will truly defend her and empower the people against the destructive force of unrestrained government and corporate excess, profligate spending, and woke cultural indoctrination,” Roy said in an email to supporters.
“That leader is Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ” Roy continued.
Though he has not officially announce a bid for presidency, polling has consistently show DeSantis is Donald Trump’s biggest obstacle to securing the GOP nomination for president, especially after Republicans’ disappointing performance in the midterm elections, which they blamed on Trump.
Roy touched on that in his statement on Wednesday.
“[DeSantis] has also proven his ability to win at the ballot box time and time again. When other Republicans were faltering in key races, Governor DeSantis provided a positive vision for the future with prudent, conservative action,” Roy said. “The result was crystal clear: Republicans enjoyed sweeping, historic performances statewide.”
Roy also cited DeSantis’ controversial political stunts, like sending migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and rejecting mask mandates during the height of the COVID pandemic as some of the reasons why he’s throwing his support behind him.
“I believe it’s time for a new generation of leadership,” Roy said. “It’s time for younger, but proven, leadership to offer America eight solid years of transformational change.”
