Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie (R) said things will not end “nicely” for Donald Trump while positioning himself as the candidate who can take down the former president at a town hall in New Hampshire.
“You better have somebody on that stage who can do to him what I did to Marco [Rubio], because that’s the only thing that’s gonna defeat Donald Trump,” Christie said on Monday. “And that means you gotta have the skill to do it. And that means you have to be fearless, because he will come back — and right at you.”
“So you need to think about who’s got the skill to do that and who’s got the guts to do it, because it’s not going to end nicely,” he continued. “No matter what, his end will not be a calm and quiet conclusion.”
Christie’s comments come as Republicans are starting to wonder whether Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has what it takes to topple Trump.
“Slaying a monster like Donald Trump requires a certain presence. But in his Piers Morgan interview, DeSantis comes across as a politician who wants to hit his talking points and prove logically why he’s superior to Trump. And the thing is, you don’t slay dragons with logic. You need guts, heart, and a razor-sharp sword (or, in this case, tongue),” conservative commentator Matt Lewis wrote in an op-ed in the Daily Beast.
Christie has not officially announce a bid for the presidency, neither has DeSantis. But both men have traveled to early primary states in recent weeks.
