Former New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie is predicting a ‘monumental defeat’ for the GOP in this year’s midterm elections.

In a podcast appearance with comedian Hasan Minhaj, Christie argued that a resounding defeat for the Republican Party in November will force a reckoning within the GOP.

“Losing forces you politically to have to listen to the truth,” Christie said. “I think we’re on our way to a monumental defeat as a party in the 2026 midterms. And when that happens, I think people for practical reasons will begin to re-evaluate whether they really want to continue to hear the things that led to the losing or they want to hear some different ideas, different approach.”

Midterm elections are usually a referendum on the president. Voter frustration with the high cost of living and Donald Trump’s record-low approval ratings increases Democrats’ odds of not only flipping the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterms but the Senate as well.

Even with a resounding defeat, Christie conceded that it will be a while before the Republican Party changes course.

“You have to have a long-term view of this,” he said. “I think it’ll turn, but it’s not going to turn that day. But you got to start laying the groundwork. It doesn’t happen like that.”
