The ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is urging Democrats to slow down the confirmation process for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.
“Vetting a nominee for a lifetime appointment to the high court is serious business. The American people rightly expect a full and thorough vetting process. We should not sacrifice the integrity of our constitutional advice and consent responsibility to meet an arbitrary timeline. The Court’s next term doesn’t begin until October, so there’s absolutely no need to rush,” Grassley said in a statement on Monday.
Grassley said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-Ill) announced a “truncated vetting timeline” with an announcement of the hearing, “before even seeking records necessary to begin a complete review.”
Durbin announced last week that the hearing for Jackson’s nomination to the Supreme Court will begin on March 21 and last four days.
A spokesperson for Durbin said that the timeline is fair and timely, and pointed to the Republican confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, which took 30 days, saying there can’t be “one set of rules for Republicans and another set of rules for Democrats,” according to RollCall.
“Republicans waited just 16 days from when President Trump announced then-Judge Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court before proceeding with a hearing,” spokesperson Emily Hampsten said. “With a March 21 start to the hearing, there will be 24 days from the announcement of Judge Jackson’s nomination to her hearing.”
Democrats want to confirm Jackson as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court by the time they leave for the two-week April recess on April 8. Jackson will be replacing retiring liberal Justice Stephen Breyer.
Who are the Republicans to tell the Democrats how to handle their nominee for the Supreme Court. They didn’t do a very good job at vetting their nominees. If they think they can make the rules up as they go along, then they are out of their minds. Also if the Republicans that confirmed her a few months ago don’t for her again then they should be removed from office.????????
