CNN analyst Mark Preston warned Friday that if Donald Trump is jailed for violating the gag order in his New York criminal case there will be “civil unrest across the country”.
“If that were to happen, first of all, I think you would probably see civil unrest across the country, certainly in some cities. That’s one,” Preston said, according to a clip shared by Mediaite. “And two, politically, if I’m the Biden campaign, I don’t want to necessarily see him in jail, because that’s just going to get people more inflamed and more fired up.”
Trump is currently on trial in New York where he faces 34 counts of falsifying business records to pay hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.
Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the trial has imposed a gag order barring Trump from attacking witnesses, court staff, jurors, and members of their families, including Merchan’s daughter who was repeatedly attacked by Trump on Truth Social.
But Trump is accused of violating the gag order with a post on Truth Social earlier this week which legal analysts say was “clearly an attempt to intimidate jurors.”
Prosecutors have asked for Trump to be fined for violating the gag order and to be reminded that he could potentially face jail time after repeated violations.
Merchan has scheduled a hearing for April 23 regarding the request.
