He made the announcement while discussing the failed Texas lawsuit on the ‘Battleground’ podcast with co-host David Plouffe.
“I spent 29 years as a Republican, I’ve spent two and a half as an independent, and later this afternoon I will register as a member of the Democratic Party,” Schmidt said. “Because in America today, it’s only the Democratic Party—which is the oldest political party in the world—that stands for the ideas and ideals of American liberty.”

Schmidt who worked on two Republican presidential campaigns, McCain’s in 2008, and former President George W. Bush’s in 2004 renounced his party in 2018 and identified as an independent. But, he said we are in a fight to save the country from what was once fringe beliefs that Donald Trump brought to the mainstream.
“I think we win—and by we, I mean America—or they win,” Schmidt said. “And I think the place where that fight will take place from is in the Democratic Party.”
