Republicans in Cobb County, Georgia have canceled a prayer vigil for ‘J6 Patriots’ scheduled for Thursday, the one year anniversary of the attack on the Capitol.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Cobb County GOP said that the “mischaracterization of the event scheduled for January 6th and the ensuing concerns for the safety of those in attendance” led it to cancel the event.
However, the county party chair Salleigh Grubbs initially defended the program as a way to honor those who suffered a “miscarriage of justice.”
The Cobb County GOP released details of the program on Sunday. It was supposed to include a livestream of former President Donald Trump’s now-canceled press conference and a candlelight vigil for ‘J6 Patriots,’ including at least 30 insurrectionists who are awaiting trial on charges relating to Jan. 6, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Georgia state Rep. Teri Anulewicz (D) blasted the program, calling it an “homage to treason.”
Jason Shepherd, a former Cobb County GOP chair who also criticized the program was relieved that they canceled the event.
“They made the right choice,” he told AJC. “It will go a long way into encouraging unity among Cobb Republicans.”
