Colorado state Rep. Matt Soper (R) took to social media to thank God after the death of former President Jimmy Carter, whom he referred to as a “despot.”
Carter, the 39th president, died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100-years-old. Though he only served one term in the White House Carter continued to be recognized throughout his life for his post-White House philanthropy and advocacy.
He also continued to volunteer with the Habitat for Humanity home-building organisation late into his 90s.
But, according to Soper, Carter was a “despot” whose death should be celebrated with champagne.
“Opened a bottle of Champagne tonight! The world is rid of a despot,” Soper wrote on X. ” Thank God he finally called Carter home! The worst president in the history of the U.S.! We are still recovering! He destroyed the U.S. in such a way that even the 4th generation is still suffering.”
Soper later apologized, telling a local Colorado outlet that his post was in “poor taste” and he is “very sorry.”
