Cory Booker breaks record for longest Senate speech.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) delivered the longest recorded floor speech in Senate history, breaking the record set by segregationist Sen. Strom Thurmond.

Booker began speaking Monday evening shortly after 7 p.m., to protest Donald Trump’s policies.

Over the next 24 hours Booker railed against Trump administration’s efforts to destroy government agencies created by Congress, cut taxes for the rich and get rid of programs like Medicaid.

Booker eventually broke Thurmond’s record of 24 hours and 18 minutes, which he made while opposing the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

“I’m not here because of his speech,” Booker said of Thurmond Tuesday evening. “I’m here in spite of his speech. I’m here because as poweful as he was, the people were more powerful.”
