COVID variant cases spiking in Florida.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Florida due to the variants has more than doubled over the past two weeks.

Florida had reported 1,075 variant cases through Thursday, according to USA Today. But, a report released on Sunday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), shows Florida adding another 1,255 cases, bringing the state’s total number of variants to 2,330, the highest in the country.



The majority of cases in Florida is the B.1.1.7 variant which spreads more easily and quickly than the other variants and may be associated with an increased risk of death compared to other variant viruses, according to the CDC.

There’s also a spike in the number of cases of P.1, a variant first seen in Brazil. The state added another 19 cases to reach 42 overall.

Overall, the country has recorded 10,985 known cases of coronavirus variants. 2,303 variant cases were recorded on Sunday, more than doubling the previous record set on Tuesday.
