Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla) is asking Palm Beach County in Florida to tax Mar-a-Lago at the rate Donald Trump said it is worth.
The request to Palm Beach County property appraiser, Dorothy Jacks, obtained by NBC News, comes amid Trump’s ongoing civil fraud trial in New York.
Last week, a New York judge ruled that Trump and his sons committed business fraud by inflating the value of his businesses and properties to banks.
Trump slammed the ruling, insisting that Mar-a-Lago is worth “50 or 100 times” more than its $18 million appraised value. He claims the property is worth “closer to $1.5 billion.”
“Between 2011 and 2021, you value the Mar-a-Lago property between $18 million and $28 million,” Moskowitz wrote in the letter.
“Mar-a-Lago was listed as worth $490 million in financial documents given to banks,” he added. “If the property value of Mar-a-Lago is so much higher than it was appraised, will you be amending the property value in line with the Trump family’s belief that the property is worth well over a billion dollars?”
Trump’s ongoing civil fraud trial in New York is to determine damages. Prosecutors are seeking $250 million in penalties and a ban on Trump and his organizations from ever doing business in New York.
