Democrat flips state Senate seat in Virginia.

Democrats in Virginia flipped a state Senate seat, held by Republicans since 1996, in a special election on Tuesday.

Democrat Aaron Rouse defeated Republican Kevin Adams by less than 1 percent in the race to replace Republican Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 7th state Senate district. Kiggans defeated former Democratic U.S Rep. Elaine Luria (Va.) in the November midterm election.

“THANK YOU! With your support, and the support of voters from across Virginia Beach and Norfolk, we have won this Special Election,” Rouse wrote in a tweet. “No rest for the weary – tomorrow, we head to Richmond to get to work for Virginia families.”

Rouse’s victory expands Democrats majority in the Virginia state Senate to 22-18.
