Alaska Democrat Mary Peltola defeated former governor and GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin for a full two year term in the House.
Peltola made history in August when she became the first Alaska Native to be elected to Congress after defeating Palin in a special election to complete the remainder of late GOP Rep. Don Young’s term.
Peltola celebrated her victory on Wednesday night tweeting: “WE DID IT.”
Results from Alaska have been delayed for weeks because of the state’s new ranked-choice voting system.
Peltola defeated Palin in first choice votes but since she failed to win more than 50 percent, the candidate in third, in this case Republican Nick Begich was eliminated and his votes redistributed to the two remaining candidates.
Peltola’s victory means she will serve a full term in the House, which is a major blow to Kevin McCarthy’s already narrow majority.
