Congressional black caucus chairwoman Rep. Joyce Beatty (D–Ohio) was one of nine people arrested by Capitol police during a protest on Thursday calling for an end to voting restriction laws being passed in states around the country.
According to the Daily Beast, Beatty, 71, and other activists such as Women’s March co-founders Tamika Mallory and Linda Sarsour marched on the building that houses the offices of Senate, congregating in the lobby and chanting “End the filibuster!”
She shared photos of her arrest on social media with the caption, “Let the people vote. Fight for justice.”
Capitol Police confirmed the arrest, in a social media post, “After officers arrived on the scene, they warned the demonstrators three times to stop. Those who refused were arrested. … Two males and seven females were transported to USCP Headquarters for processing.”
