Democratic congresswoman Jackie Speier will not run for re-election in 2022.

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) announced on Tuesday that she will not be running for re-election to the U.S. House.

“Today, I’m announcing that I will not be a candidate for reelection to Congress in 2022,” Speier said in a video announcing her decision.

“It’s time for me to come home. Time for me to be more than a weekend wife, mother and friend,” she added.

Speier successful ran for the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors in 1980. She went on to serve in both chambers of California’s state legislature before entering the U.S. House in 2008 representing California’s 12th district, then the state’s 14th congressional district in 2013.

Before going into elected politics, Speier survived being shot multiple times during a fact-finding mission to Jonestown, Guyana in 1978. She was serving as an aide to late Rep. Leo Ryan (D-Calif.),who died in the attack.

Speier won re-election last year by nearly 60 points and was not expected to face a tough challenge in 2022. She is the ninth Democratic lawmaker to retire ahead of next year’s midterms, according to the Hill.
