Democratic mayors slam Trump’s federal takeover of DC.

The Democratic Mayors Association release a statement on Monday slamming Donald Trump’s plans to take over the Washington, D.C. police department and deploy National Guard troops in the nation’s capital.

At a press conference, Trump claims rampant violent crime in DC led to the unprecedented decision despite data showing that crime is actually decreasing.

In a statement Democratic mayors called the move a “political charade,” noting that “crime is down in most major cities – including Washington, DC – in spite of” Trump and criticized his policies.

“If Trump actually cared about reducing crime, he wouldn’t have made unprecedented cuts to public safety programs that actually work. If Trump actually cared about our communities, he’d be working to protect them, not vilifying them. But the truth is Trump doesn’t care – he only wants to create yet another political charade to serve his own interests and distract,” the statement posted on X said.

“While Trump may try to take credit for their work, Democratic Mayors will never stop fighting to protect and strengthen our communities because that’s what they do — they get things done,” the mayors added.

Trump said Monday that he might replicate his plan for DC in other cities across the country.
