Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn) was assaulted in the elevator of her Washington, D.C. apartment building on Thursday.
The incident occurred around 7:15 a.m. according to a statement from Craig’s chief of staff Nick Coe.
“Rep. Craig defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay,” the statement reads. “Rep. Craig called 9-1-1 and the assailant fled the scene of the assault.”
The attack does not appear to be politically motivated, Coe added.
Craig was first elected to Congress in 2018 and is the first openly LGBTQ member of Congress from Minnesota.
The assault comes as members of Congress are facing increased threats against them. The U.S. Capitol Police investigated roughly 7,500 cases of potential threats against lawmakers last year alone, according to CBS.
