Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) was the butt of the joke in Iowa this week after he was tricked into posing with a handmade snowflake gift with the ‘fascist’ hidden in it.
Though he is yet to announce his run for president in 2024, DeSantis held a rally in Davenport, Iowa to tout his record in Florida and rail against ‘woke ideology.’
While he was in the first-in-the-nation presidential caucus state, DeSantis was given a framed handmade snowflake and even posed for a photo holding it, unaware that the word ‘fascist’ was hidden inside.
“My friend makes snowflakes to give to politicians who come to Iowa—there are special messages for odious Republicans—please look at the snowflake carefully,” IowaCaptive wrote in Twitter.
DeSantis has been called a fascist due to policies he implemented in Florida that aim to silence ideas and behaviors he does not agree with. He has taken steps to limit discussions about race, gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom and the workplace. He also banned books from public libraries and schools that discuss those complex issues and engineered the firing of officials who do not agree with his policies.
Earlier this month, the youngest member of congress Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost (D-Fla.) said DeSantis’ policies targeting Black, transgender and LGBTQ people are “fascism.”
“We have to call it for what it is: He is abusing his power and using the state to target political opponents and political enemies,” Frost told CNN. “And there’s a word for that, and it’s fascism, and we have to be honest about it.”
