Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is not on board with removing his name from the Colorado ballot in solidarity with Donald Trump, because he says the former president would be celebrating if the shoe was on the other foot.
In an interview with Real Clear Politics, DeSantis made it clear that he does not agree with the Colorado Supreme Court decision to ban Trump from the ballot in 2024 under the 14th Amendment.
He told RCP that the decision “takes us down a road that’s not going to be good for this country when a court can disqualify you without a criminal conviction.”
“But let’s just be clear,” DeSantis continued. “Trump is fine with weaponization if it’s against people he doesn’t like.”
DeSantis pointed to a complaint filed by Trump allies in March this year before he announced his run for president. Close allies of the former president filed a complaint with the Florida ethics board accusing DeSantis of violating campaign finance laws by running an “illegal shadow campaign for president.”
The complaint was later dismissed.
DeSantis mocked his fellow GOP presidential primary rival Vivek Ramaswamy who called on other candidates in the Republican primary field to remove their name from the Colorado ballot in solidarity with Trump.
“If one of Trump’s competitors was removed by a state Supreme Court, is there any chance in hell he would remove himself in solidarity? He’d spike the football!” DeSantis said.
