The second night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) drew 39 percent more viewers than night 2 of the Republican National Convention.
According to Nielsen, the second night of the DNC drew an estimated audience of nearly 20.8 million viewers. In comparison, 14.8 million people tuned in to watch the RNC on its second night.
The second night ratings not only crushed the RNC, but topped the first night of the DNC which averaged about 20 million viewers.
Tuesday’s convention featured speeches from former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama.
During the former president’s address viewership spiked to 21.6 million, above the night’s average.
Both nights of the DNC saw bigger audiences than the first two nights of the RNC. Nielsen estimated the first night’s audience was 18.1 million.
The final day of the conventions usually draw the most viewers. In 2016, 29.8 million people tuned in to watch Hilary Clinton accept the nomination, while 24.6 watched Joe Biden in 2020.
Last month, an estimated 25.3 million people tuned in to watch Trump accept the Republican Party nomination. According to the Rolling Stone, the ratings-obsessed former president has been privately worried about the ratings for Harris’ speech.
