More people tuned in to watch the first night of the Democratic National Convention compared to the opening night of the Republican National Convention.
Over 20 million people tuned in to watch the opening night of the DNC on Monday across 13 networks, according to Nielsen. In comparison, the opening day of the RNC drew an estimated 18.13 million, about 2 million fewer viewers.
The majority of the viewers (15.3 million) were in the 55 and older demographic. 3.51 million were in the 35-54 age group.
Just 851,000 viewers in the 18-34 demographic watched the first night of the DNC this year, a decline from 1.1 million in 2020 and 2.4 million in 2016.
Ratings were up this year from the 19.7 million that tuned in for the first night of the DNC in 2020, but down significantly from 24.9 million first night viewers in 2016, according to Deadline.
MSNBC topped all cable news networks with 4.6 million viewers, followed by CNN with 3.2 million, ABC News with 2.8 million and Fox News with 2.4 million. 2 million viewers tuned in to CBS News and 1.8 million watched on NBC News.
