An elderly Asian woman left her attacker beaten and bloodied in San Francisco after he punched her in the face unprovoked.
Xiao Zhen Xie, 76 said she was leaning by a light pole while waiting at the traffic light around Market Street in San Francisco when a 39-year-old man approached her and punched her in the face without provocation, according to KPIX.
Xie fought back against the attacker by grabbing a stick and hitting him with it.
In a video following the attack, Xie can be seen holding the stick she used to fight back in one hand and an ice bag in the other. “You bum, why did you hit me?” she said in Chinese.
Both Xie and her attacker were taken to the hospital after the incident.
Her daughter Dong-Mei Li told KPIX that her mom is “traumatized and very scared”. She’s unable to see anything from her right eye, her daughter says.
John Chen, Xie’s grandson and their family set up a GoFundMe campaign to help Xie with her medical expenses. She is also a cancer survivor and has had diabetes for over 10 years, according to the GoFundMe page.
This latest attack comes as there’s a spike in the number of hate crimes reported against members of the Asian community since the start of the pandemic.
According to data from Stop AAPI Hate, a national coalition documenting discrimination during the pandemic, there are nearly 3,800 reported incidents of anti-Asian hate between March 2020 and last month.
This is so wrong! 76 years old? Who brought this person up? He is a predatory bully and must MUST be punished!
