Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo) is doubling down on calling out Donald Trump’s lies about the election and those that enable him including the woman who replaced her as House Republican Conference Chair, Elise Stefanik.
After she was removed from House Republican leadership last week, Cheney told reporters: “I think that the party is in a place that we have got to bring it back from, and we’ve got to get back to a position where we are a party that can fight for conservative principles, that can fight for substance. We cannot be dragged backward by the very dangerous lies of a former president.”
Asked on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures to react to Cheney’s comments Stefanik said Cheney is “looking backwards” while the party is trying to move forward.
“She is looking backwards,” Stefanik said. “Republicans are looking forward. We are unified. And we are talking about conservative principles. President Trump is an important voice in the Republican Party. We are working as one team.”
Cheney was removed from GOP House leadership last week after Republican frustration with the Wyoming congresswoman reached a boiling point due to her repeatedly calling out Donald Trump for spreading falsehoods about his election defeat.
But, Cheney is not backing down. On Sunday she told ABC News “it’s very dangerous” that the House Republican conference chose Trump-backed Stefanik to replace her as conference chair.
“I think that we have to recognize how quickly things can unravel. We have to recognize what it means for the nation to have a former President who has not conceded, and who continues to suggest that our electoral system cannot function, cannot do the will of the people,” Cheney added.
