Right-wing billionaire Elon Musk is threatening any Republican member of the House and Senate who vote to support a spending bill to keep the government open.
“Any member of the House or Senate who votes for this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in 2 years!” Musk wrote in a post on X.
Donald Trump and JD Vance also criticized the bill saying “we should pass a streamlined spending bill that doesn’t give Chuck Schumer and the Democrats everything they want.”
Amid the backlash, Johnson is reportedly considering pulling the interim spending bill and introducing a “clean” continuing resolution to keep the government open.
However, it is still unclear if Republicans will even support this ‘clean’ bill and Democrats are already signalling that they might not be on board with an entire new proposal after securing a number of victories in the initial bill through bipartisan negotiations.
“Given the negotiations that have taken place, I don’t think that that would be agreeable to a good number of the Democratic Caucus — perhaps the majority,” Rep. Chuy Garcia (D-Ill.) said.
“I think it would become hugely problematic if we depart” from the negotiated package, he added.
“House Republicans have been ordered to shut down the government. And hurt the working class Americans they claim to support. You break the bipartisan agreement, you own the consequences that follow,” House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a statement, according to The Hill.
