Elon Musk’s transgender daughter has filed a petition to change her name so she is no longer “related” to him, according to the Daily Beast.
Musk’s daughter, 18, filed the petition in California Superior Court in April to have her gender officially recognized as female and to take on the maiden name of her mother, Justine Musk, Elon’s first wife.
She wrote in her legal documents that she “no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.” There will be a hearing on the matter later this month.
Asked for comment Musk said: “She does not want to be a public figure. I think it is important to defend her right to privacy. Please don’t out someone against their will—it’s not right.”
Cathy Renna, communications director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, told The Daily Beast that Musk has a “history of making anti-trans and disrespectful comments particularly about pronoun usage.”
Musk has faced criticisms and accusation of transphobia in 2020 after tweeting that “pronouns suck.”
“I absolutely support trans, but all these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare,” Musk wrote in another tweet.
Renna told The Daily Beast that the group “would never approve or condone the outing of a young person because they have famous parents,” but she hopes this “would be a wake-up call to Elon Musk.”
