Facebook has banned Donald Trump “indefinitely” after he instigated a deadly riot on the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.
In a blog post Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote, “the shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.”

“We believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great. Therefore, we are extending the block we have placed on his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is complete.”
This an unprecedented escalation by the social media company to moderate the spread of conspiracy theories on its platform. It comes one day after Facebook removed a video posted by Trump repeating false claims about the election hours after his supporters stormed the Capitol.

Twitter also locked Donald Trump’s account on Wednesday for 12 hours and warned that “future violations of the Twitter Rules… will result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account.”
