Facebook removed a video posted on Donald Trump’s personal page for spreading misinformation about the coronavirus.
The video included a segment from a Fox News interview in which Trump said children should return to school because they are “almost immune” or “virtually immune” from the disease. Studies have debunked this claim, yet Trump continues to repeat it as he argues for school to be re-open fully this fall.
“This video includes false claims that a group of people is immune from COVID-19 which is a violation of our policies around harmful COVID misinformation,” a Facebook policy spokesperson told NBC News.
A link to the post showed a screen with a message that reads: “This content isn’t available right now.”
This is a rare move for Facebook. The company has received backlash from critics for their reluctance to censor Trump on their platform. This is the first time they removed a Trump post for spreading misinformation about the coronavirus. In June the company removed Trump campaign ads which featured Nazi symbols.
