Robert ‘Bobby’ Crimo Jr., the father of the alleged Highland Park parade shooter says he does not regret signing a consent form for his son to apply for gun ownership after he threatened to kill his entire family.
In 2019, a family member called police to their home after the then-19-year-old Robert Crimo III, had made threats saying he “was going to kill everyone” in the home. Officers confiscated 16 knives, a dagger, and a sword from the home but did not open a criminal investigation.
In an interview with ABC News, Crimo Jr. called the incident a “child’s outburst…taken out of context.”
Later that year, Crimo Jr. signed the affidavit allowing his son to apply to obtain a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card so he could purchase firearms or ammunition.
“I filled out the consent form to allow my son to go through the process that the Illinois State Police have in place for an individual to obtain a FOID card,” Crimo Jr. said. “They do background checks. Whatever that entails, I’m not exactly sure. And either you’re approved or denied, and he was approved.”
Illinois State Police have said that there will a criminal investigation into the father’s potential culpability because he sponsored his son’s FOID card.
“Do I regret that? No, not three years ago — signing a consent form to go through the process … that’s all it was,” Crimo Jr. said, adding that he is not worried about potential legal consequences. “Had I purchased guns throughout the years and given them to him in my name, that’s a different story. But he went through that whole process himself.”
Crimo noted his son purchased the weapons with his own money and registered them in his own name. Crimo III’s FOID card was also renewed in 2021 without his father’s involvement, authorities say.
On July 4th Crimo III opened fire during a parade in Highland Park, Il., killing seven people and injuring several others.
Crimo III has been charged with seven counts of first-degree murder and will face more charges in the days to come. He confessed to the shooting after his arrest, and said he also considered another shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, but didn’t carry out that second attack.
“This isn’t Bobby,” Crimo Jr. said. “I guess that’s why it’s so hard to wrap yourself around it. It doesn’t add up.”
I do not understand this father’s position. I understand denial and not being responsible for your child’s behavior. However, if that child had threatened others or stated he wanted to kill people, then you need to pay attention and get that child evaluated. Angry, homicidal and threatening are all very big signs that he needs help and should not have access to any guns, or bombs, or knives. A hospital psych ward would have been a good first response. ,
Just another reason for abortions and birth control as well as an education! That kid looks deranged and he didn’t get that way overnight so dad needs to wrap his head around the fact that his kid posed to be a danger long ago!
When he shot all those people, he was not a child. He got the license as an adult. The father never bought him guns.
Keep finding excuses for these white murderers and there will be more! 300: 2022 already!
