The Sarasota County School Board on Tuesday voted to pass a resolution calling for the resignation of Moms For Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler.
The move comes weeks after the Florida Center for Government Accountability, revealed that Ziegler’s husband, Florida GOP chair Christian Ziegler, has been under investigation for rape since October. Bridget Ziegler told police that she, her husband and the woman accusing him of rape have had consensual threesomes in the past.
The Sarasota County School board voted 4-1 to ask Ziegler to step down from her position on the panel. Ziegler was the lone dissenting vote.
“You know, I am disappointed,” Ziegler said at the meeting, according to the Daily Beast. “As people may know, I serve on another public board and this issue did not come up and we were able to forge ahead with the business of the board.”
Earlier this year, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) appointed Ziegler to the new Disney World governing board.
Tuesday’s move by the Sarasota County School board is the furthest they could go since they are unable to remove Ziegler from the position, just recommend that she voluntarily resign.
Only the governor can suspend a board member for malfeasance, neglect of duty, and other alleged violations, The Daily Beast noted. If that happens it would still require a majority vote by the state Senate to remove her from the seat.
Ziegler was endorsed by DeSantis during her election for the board so it is very unlikely he will suspend her. At the meeting Ziegler called the resolution toothless.
“Just one more time, this does not have any teeth, is that correct?” she asked school board lawyer Patrick Duggan.
“This board has no ability to remove one of the other members,” Duggan responded.
