Former GOP lawmaker says Trump asked him to overturn the election but so far Jack Smith has not reached out to him.

Former Republican Congressman Mo Brooks suggests he is waiting for Special Counsel Jack Smith to reach out to him after he accused former President Donald Trump of encouraging him to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Brooks told NBC News that he will meet with Smith if he is asked to and is “mildly surprised” that the special counsel’s office has not sought a meeting with him as yet.

“Yeah, if they asked me to, I’d explain what I know about it. Whether it’s relevant or material, I’m not sure,” Brooks said. “I was shocked [Trump] was so blatant about it — illegal conduct.”

Brooks was a former close ally of former President Trump. The former Alabama congressman led Republicans’ efforts in the House to overturn the 2020 presidential election and spoke at the “Stop the Steal” rally that preceded the attack on the Capitol.

His relationship with Trump turned sour during the 2022 election cycle after the former president rescinded his endorsement of Brooks in the Alabama Republican senate primary.

Brooks fired back in a statement saying Trump asked him to “rescind” the election and he told him that such a move is not possible.

“President Trump asked me to rescind the 2020 elections, immediately remove Joe Biden from the White House, immediately put President Trump back in the White House, and hold a new special election for the presidency,” Brooks said in a statement at the time. “As a lawyer, I’ve repeatedly advised President Trump that January 6 was the final election contest verdict and neither the U.S. Constitution nor the U.S. Code permit(s) what President Trump asks. Period.”

Smith is investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. Last week, Trump said he was notified that he is a target in the investigation, signalling that the probe may be wrapping up.
