Former GOP mayoral candidate sentenced to 10 days in prison for his role in Jan. 6 attack.

A former Republican candidate for mayor in Connecticut was sentenced to 10 days in person for his role in the Jan. 6 2021 attack on the Capitol, NBC News reports.

Gino DiGiovanni Jr. was arrested in August and charged with four misdemeanor counts: two counts of entering a restricted building, one count of disorderly conduct inside a Capitol building, and one count of parading, demonstrating or picketing inside a Capitol building.

He plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of entering and remaining on restricted grounds as part of plea deal last year.

Prosecutors wanted DiGiovanni Jr to be sentenced to 30 days behind bars because he was not remorseful when confronted about his conduct on Jan. 6.

But, DiGiovanni Jr’s lawyer asked for leniency, arguing that his “good deeds throughout his entire life outweigh this one bad one” and that his business has suffered as a result to the charges.

On Wednesday, Chief U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg sentenced DiGiovanni Jr. to 10 days in prison, plus one year of supervised release and 50 hours of community service.
