Former President Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported.
Chip Carter, a son of the former president, said his father died about 3:40 p.m. on Sunday in his Plains home, the outlet reported.
Carter had been in home hospice care since February 2023. Carter’s wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, passed away on November 19, 2023, at 96. The couple had been married for 77 years.
Carter, the 39th president, only served one term in the White House but continued to be recognized throughout his life for his humanitarian and political work.
In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for undertaking peace negotiations, campaigning for human rights, and working for social welfare.
He is survived by four children — Jack, Chip, Jeff and Amy — 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, according to the Carter Center.
