Fox News host calls for the release of the man arrested for attempted homicide of Paul Pelosi because 'a lot of people get hit with hammers'

Fox News host Jesse Watters is calling for the man suspected of fracturing the skull of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband to be released immediately because people get hit with hammers all the time.

Paul Pelosi, 82, was attacked with a hammer early Friday morning after 42-year-old David Depape broke into the home looking for his wife. Depape, who has promoted right wing conspiracy theories online, allegedly shouted “where is Nancy?”before beating hitting him with the hammer.

Pelosi was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for surgery to “repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands,” Speaker Pelosi’s spokesperson Drew Hammill said. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Depape was arrested and charged with attempted homicide, assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, burglary, and “several several other additional felonies”, San Francisco police Chief Bill Scott said. He is currently being held at the San Francisco County Jail.

During Friday’s edition of The Five, Watters called for Depape to be released. He argued that he is being treated unfairly because people get attacked with hammers all the time and the suspect is out on bail the next day.

“What I want is that I want this alleged perpetrator to be treated the exact same way if he had treated — if he had attacked anybody else. Because a lot of people get hit with hammers. A lot of people get attacked. And a lot of the times they’re out on bail the next day and it’s a simple assault charge,” Watters said.

He continued: “So I don’t know why this guy is being treated differently. He’s facing what? Attempted homicide? He’s in prison right now? We’ve seen people assault people all the time randomly with all kinds of weapons. And we see them released the next day. So I don’t know why this guy’s getting all of a sudden special treatment or different treatment because the victim was so high profile.”
