Florida Congressman Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) resigned from the House of Representatives Wednesday, hours after President-elect Donald Trump nominated him as attorney general, thus ending a House ethics probe into allegations of sex trafficking, sexual misconduct and drug use.
According to Punchbowl News, Gaetz’s resignation comes two days before the Ethics Committee planned to vote on releasing their “highly damaging” report.
With his resignation, the House ethics committee no longer has investigatory jurisdiction over him so the committee’s probe will end.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump announced that he has nominated Gaetz to serve as his attorney general. However, it’s unclear whether the Republican firebrand will be confirmed by the Senate.
Last year, Gaetz led the effort to oust former Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA.) as Speaker of the House.
McCarthy said at the time that Gaetz wanted him gone because he failed to stop the House Ethics probe. Gaetz denied the claim, saying the motion to vacate was because McCarthy had broke some promises he made to far- right lawmakers to secure the speakership in January.
Gaetz later reportedly told colleagues that he led the effort to remove McCarthy as speaker as payback for the Ethics probe.
