George Floyd’s 4-year-old grandniece was shot while she was sleeping in her family home in Houston on New Year’s Day.
According to Houston PD, several shots were fired into the apartment about 2:55 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 1 while two adults and two children were sleeping.
One of the children, identified by family members as Arianna Delane, was hit in the torso.
Arianna’s mother, George Floyd’s niece Bianca was in bed at the time. Her husband, Derek Delane, heard the shots and ran into his daughter’s room.
“My daughter jumped up and said, ‘Daddy, I’ve been hit’ and I was shocked until I seen the blood and I realized my 4-year-old daughter was really hit,” he told KTRK. “She didn’t know what was going on. She was asleep.”
Family members called the police and an ambulance but they took so long to respond that they ended up taking her to the hospital themselves. Delane said officers did not arrive on the scene until more than four hours after the shooting.
Family members say Arianna’s liver and lungs were pierced and she suffered three broken ribs. She underwent surgery and is now in stable condition.
Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said in a statement that he had opened an investigation into the department’s delay.
Houston police have no description of a suspect or motive for the shooting so far and is asking anyone with information to contact the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
