Minneapolis to pay George Floyd’s family $27 million.

George Floyd's family settles suit against Minneapolis for $27 million.

The city of Minneapolis has agreed to pay the family of George Floyd $27 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit.

Floyd’s family filed the lawsuit in July against the city and the officers involved in the arrest that led to his death.

The city council voted unanimously on Friday to approve the settlement.

Floyd died in police custody last May after Minneapolis ex-cop Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes and ignored his pleas about being unable to breathe.

The settlement comes weeks before the trial for Chauvin is set to begin. He’s the first of four officers from the day of the arrest to stand trial.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, as well as third-degree murder. Jury selection is underway in his trial. Six of 12 jurors have been seated as of Friday morning.
