Newt Gingrich’s attempts to criticize President Joe Biden for his handling of classified documents ended up strengthening the case against Donald Trump after he admitted that the former president knew exactly what he was doing.
Former Special Counsel Robert Hur, who led the Justice Department’s investigation of Biden’s handling of classified documents, is schedule to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday about his report.
Gingrich appeared on Fox News to preview Hur’s testimony about his report in which the former special counsel described President Biden as a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
Gingrich argued that while Biden may have had no idea what he was doing–a shot at the president’s mental abilites— Trump, on the other hand, knew exactly what he was doing.
“I mean, you can argue that Trump shouldn’t have had [classified documents] in Mar-a-Lago under lock and key, but at least he knew what he was doing,” Gingrich said, according to a clip shared by Mediaite. “In the case of Biden, he says, ‘Gee, I didn’t know they were there.”
Trump faces 40 criminal charges for willfully retaining classified documents and obstructing the government’s attempts to recover them.
Prosecutors alleged that Trump obstructed justice in his classified documents case after being given multiple chances to return the documents.
Authorities say Trump asked for camera footage from Mar-a-Lago showing members of his staff moving boxes of documents in and out of a storage room to be deleted after he received a subpoena for the documents and one day before the FBI visited the property. He then lied about it.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to all the charges and claim the case against him is a ‘witch hunt’.
