GOP congressman compares new restaurant at the Capitol to “the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem”

Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) went on an anti-Muslim rant over food at the Capitol.

According to Politico, Metz Culinary Management will take over eateries on the House side of the Capitol complex beginning in August, bringing a slew of new restaurants.

Among the changes will be replacing Steak n’ Shake with a location of CHA Street Food, a popular eatery serving Indian and Pakistani cuisine with an American twist.

But for Collins replacing Steak n’ Shake with CHA Street Food is equivalent to a holy war.

“They’re replacing Steak n Shake with a halal restaurant,” Collins posted to X. “This is equivalent to the Muslim conquest of Jerusalem in the 7th century.”

There were other changes which never reached the level of religious conquest and therefore likely went unnoticed by Collins.

Panera Bread will replace Au Bon Pain, acai bowl joint Freshens will replace Jamba Juice, Jimmy John’s will replace Subway and PX Tacos and Java House will replace Common Grounds coffee shop, according to Politico.

However, replacing Dunkin’ with Starbucks drew some pushback from the Massachusetts (where Dunkin’ first opened) delegation. Massachusetts Rep. Lori Trahan’s deputy chief of staff jokingly called the switch a “hostile and political attack.”
